MALACCA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin chided PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat for saying that DAP leaders could insult Islam. This, the Umno deputy president said, could lead to racial discord.
“I am puzzled and shocked as to why a spiritual leader did not oppose some DAP leaders for insulting Islam but argued that they (the DAP leaders) did not know much about the religion,” said Muhyiddin.
“We should not be condemning other religions, whether we are Muslims or non-Muslims,” he told reporters after officiating the national-level Farmers, Breeders and Fisher-men Day celebrations at the MITC in Ayer Keroh yesterday.
He said Nik Aziz’s statement meant that he had compromised his religious convictions for politics. The Deputy Prime Minister said the PAS leader should have taken the matter up with his counterparts in Pakatan and admonished the DAP leaders from making statements against another’s religion.
“If a Muslim starts babbling against the Christians, we (Barisan Nasional) would say ‘don’t do it’. This is because we have lived together for a long time and do not want to cause disharmony.
“If Nik Aziz’s edict is to be followed, then Malaysia would be ruined,” he added.
